Using the engine brake? Let your followers know.

Professional drivers know how and when to use their engine retarder brakes if their vehicle is so equipped.  While the use of these brakes is often restricted in certain areas for noise considerations, if you are using your engine brake legally you should still think of another factor besides noise and road conditions: drivers following behind you.

Your vehicle must be equipped with working brake lights.  These lights help give those behind you advance warning that you are slowing down.  However, most vehicles do not have brake lights connected to the engine brake.

If you are using your engine brake to slow down, consider lightly tapping your brakes as you slow.  This will help give those behind you some notice you are slowing down.
