The Trailer’s ABS Light

If your vehicle has an ABS light, it is important that you understand how it works.
While the requirements for ABS systems on trucks and trailers varies slightly between Canada and the USA, if your truck and trailer were both manufactured after March 1, 2001 the trailer must have an ABS light and the truck must have both a truck ABS light and a trailer ABS light, each on the truck’s dashboard.
If your vehicle is older than the date above, make sure you look up the specific requirements for ABS light functionality for your combination. But if your truck and trailer(s) were made after the date above, all lights should be off during normal operation. If a dash- or trailer-mounted ABS light stays on, there is a problem with the system. These lights must also cycle on and then off when the truck’s ignition key is turned and/or when the power connection to the trailer is unplugged and plugged back in. If the lights will not cycle, there is a problem with the system.
