Know Your Permits

It is common for a truck to be operated under the conditions of a permit.  Permits are issued whenever a carrier needs to operate in contravention of a regulation and if a permit for the contravention can be obtained.

If you drive under the authority of a permit, make sure you fully understand it.  It may be a single-trip permit with specific conditions and routing like what might be seen for an oversize load.  Other permits are for longer periods of time.  This means they are issued to the vehicle for a specific amount of time and have an expiration date.  Carriers may use these permits for routine loads and routes that are an important part of their business.

The important takeaway here is that you need to be aware of the regulations that apply to your rig and also understand the paperwork that you are required to carry.
