Drivers

Drivers`In this article, it is important as a driver to know what to look for when applying for work for a commercial driver.  Drivers should know what they. Want to do, so many drivers I have talked to are not sure what commodity they want to haul.  A driver should know some very important information when looking for a job. One of the most important and things to know when investigating a new opportunity is what the new company actually does.   You should know, what their Canadian CVOR is acceptable or not.  This can cause many problems when you are pulled into the MTO scales.  This may cause you to gain unacceptable points on your CDL CVOR    this can have a negative effect further down your career when looking for work;

You should always check out the potential new employers FMCSA score for the United States, This could have a similar affect as the Canadian version.  The critical part of this is, if your new company has a less then desirable score for FMSCA, you as a driver could lose your running authority into the US.

As these are very important factors in your search for work there are always the questions that come first to you when looking. It is normal to want to know the pay package that a company has to offer.  My question to you is   is money the most important factor in your selection of employment.  I agree that money is the means to the reasons why we work.  Providing for our families and for our future is very important to all of us. Nevertheless, and there is always a but, should money be the only thing you should look for.

In my opinion, you should be looking at the full package a company has to offer.  Always check to make sure that there is Health coverage.   This is very important because as a driver you can get hurt easily, need eye coverage etc.  It is a nice addition to your over all income to have health benefits.

You should also check to see if they have different benefits for you such as paid vacations, RRSP programs, work boot allowances, help with medicals and licensing and very important training programs.

One important item to always look for is how you are trained on the job.  This is extremely important to know before you commits you will definitely be asked to sign off on training and you must know what it is you are being trained for.

These entire questions should be asked to the recruiter when you are talking with them   they are the first response and if they do not know the answers maybe the company is not worth looking into

Happy job hunting
