Dragging Chains

Many commercial vehicles have chains for different purposes.  They may be tire chains hung on the unit year-round, cargo securement chains, and/or safety chains used for trailers.

At all times, these chains need to be properly secured.  A part of chain securement is making sure that they don’t drag along the ground.  Chains that drag along the road while you drive will wear out quickly.  This is immediately dangerous for trailer safety chains since it compromises their strength, and it is annoying for tire chains since they may get damaged during the summer and the damage not discovered until they are needed next winter.

Another summertime hazard from dragging chains is that they create heat and sparks.  Under the right conditions, a dragging chain can start a forest/grass fire.  Make sure all of your chains and other equipment are properly stowed and secured for travel.
