Serious injuries and possibly fatalities can occur from cargo falling out of the back of a van and/or reefer trailer when the doors are opened. This is one of the reasons why cargo securement is extremely important for all loads.
However, there are steps you can take to protect yourself from such incidents. When opening a trailer barn-style door, walk behind the door in the direction it is opening as you open it. As you open the door, carefully pay attention to the sounds and feelings of possible cargo shifting and falling. And always be prepared to quickly move out of the way of the path of falling cargo.
When in doubt, slow down and take your time. The door can act as a shield if you are careful, but if you are in a hurry and not paying attention falling products could ruin your day.
