Headsets in Yards

Bluetooth headsets have revolutionized the ability for professional drivers to communicate while on the road.  They have also allowed for widespread compliance with hands-free cell phone laws by permitting conversations without holding the device.

However, talking on a Bluetooth headset is still a distraction.  Most loading yards will not allow a driver to talk on the phone while they are in the yard, and for good reason too: drivers need to focus on the hazards present in those facilities.

Even if you are not on the phone, it is best to remove your headset when outside of the vehicle on a customer’s site.  The headsets can easily give the impression that you are not focused on the work, and many people consider them to look unprofessional.  A professional driver focuses on the task at hand and creates feelings of confidence in others, so do your best to save the calls for when it is safe to do so.
