Canada has announced the first ELD provider as being certified: Hutch Systems. Furthermore, there are now three different third-party certification providers for Canada: FPInnovations, CSA Group, and COMDriver Tech.
So what does this mean in a country that has taken an approach of progressive enforcement? At the moment, no one knows when ELD enforcement in Canada will truly begin, but now that an ELD provider has been identified and there are more certifiers working on certifying others, there will likely be an increase in ELDs on the market in short order.
Carriers should be paying close attention to ELDs that are certified. Once there is a reasonable selection of devices on the market, it is likely that enforcement agencies will be able to start issuing fines to carriers that are failing to comply.
